What you can do

There are opportunities for all students, from all levels and faculties. Join the SHoKE Community (MS Teams) to find out about all our opportunities.

We offer four different projects within SHoKE. All of the projects that we offer allow you to work flexibly within a multi-disciplinary team and be supported by an ARU advisor/mentor. Our main partners are Cambridgeshire and Essex County Councils.

  • SHoKE Student Consult

    This opportunity is ongoing, with no end date. Closing date for applications is 30 May.

    Student Consult is a unique opportunity for graduates and researchers to gain professional experience by tackling real social issues as part of a student consultancy team.You will receive training and get mentoring support. Work collaboratively for 3-4 weeks in a team to solve challenges presented by partner organisations. At the end of the project, you will get a chance to present your recommendations as a solution-focused report.

    Your volunteering matters - our communities are trying to develop solutions to the many challenges we are facing. You can help them by working collaboratively in a team and practically applying your experience/ skills to create fresh thinking solutions.

    What can you gain?

    Joining student consult projects will allow you to deliver real value to the community, meet new people and apply your skills in a practical setting to become a professional problem solver.

    Rewards and recognitions

    You will be sent a digital badge detailing your contribution and skills development which can be shared on LinkedIn.

    Log your volunteering hours and skills on Student Union Volunteering website to earn rewards.

    What kind of problems will I be working on?

    SHoKE partners with County Councils, NHS, Charities, and other impactful organisations to address priority issues. Previous hot topics, for instance, are youth engagement, national park accessibility, housing strategy, and tourism.

    When is the event?

    We are looking for volunteers in Tr3 (2 events to choose from)

    TR3
    Training (2 weeks) - Monday 19 May - Friday 30 May
    Project (3 weeks, voluntary) in June and July

    This opportunity takes place between 09 Sep 2024 and 25 Dec 2025

    Take part in this exciting online 24-hour social action challenge and team up with other ARU students to work with partner organisations to solve real-life social issues. This is an opportunity for all students from all levels and faculties.

    Your volunteering matters - our communities are trying to develop solutions to the many challenges we are facing such as climate change, health issues and effective social policy. Our partners are looking for fresh thinking and you can help them You will work collaboratively in a team and practically apply your experience and skills.

    We believe in the importance of student voice, the breadth of knowledge and lived experience each student holds. You should believe it too and join Impact 24. 

    What can you gain? 

    We understand that university can sometimes be a challenge, with meeting new people, potentially experiencing imposter syndrome, assessments and thinking about future employability. But Impact 24 has you covered! 

    As part of the Impact:24 project team, you will work with staff from partner organisations on real-life challenges. With mentor support, you will gain confidence, experience problem-solving, meet new people, develop your own strengths and most importantly make a difference.

    What kind of problems will I be working on?  

    Partner organisations such as Local Councils, the NHS and Charities will submit societal challenges they currently face; such as social inclusion, homelessness, mental health, and energy efficiency.
