Work with us

Job Opportunities

We exist to represent approximately 20,000 students at Anglia Ruskin University (ARU). We are a registered charity and company limited by guarantee. Our activities are managed and supported by 34 professional staff members and 55 part-time student staff who work for us alongside their studies. We have a turnover of approximately £2 million per annum and our activities are spread across campuses in Cambridge, Chelmsford and Peterborough.

In addition to our core purpose of being the legitimate representative body for students at ARU, we provide a range of services; academic and welfare advice, support to students running societies and volunteering opportunities in and around the campuses. We also run two bars and a campus shop. Whilst we play an important student representative role that sometimes sees us challenge the University, we work closely with them and support areas of delivery within their strategy.

For permanent positions, we offer a generous holiday entitlement, contributory pension scheme and training and development opportunities.

We have the Investors in People quality mark and are committed to equal opportunities in employment - we welcome applications from all sections of the community.

Advocacy and Engagement Director

Starting Salary - £40,768

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the senior team at ARU Students’ Union. We are looking for an outstanding leader to help drive forward our new strategic plan; this is a great time to be joining us, as we enter a significant phase in our development. This key role will give you a unique opportunity to work as part of the senior team and make a difference to the lives of existing and future students, in an environment that's rewarding, values driven and meaningful.

ARU Students’ Union is the representative body for 20,000 students at Anglia Ruskin University. ARU Students’ Union is a not-for-profit charity employing 34 full-time staff, 55 part-time student staff and engaging with thousands of volunteers, located across campuses in Cambridge, Chelmsford and Peterborough. We work with five elected Sabbatical Officers to deliver a wide range of services and representative functions to a burgeoning and diverse student community.

ARU Students’ Union has recently gone through a rebranding phase and has developed a new vision, mission and 2016-19 strategic plan – you will be joining a Union with drive and ambition, working hard to develop positive, proactive relationships with all of its stakeholders. This role provides an opportunity for the right person to draw on their experience, skills and enthusiasm, to bring new thinking and help shape innovative, student-focussed strategies.

The Advocacy and Engagement Director will play a pivotal role in providing tactical and strategic leadership to the Union’s Student Engagement, Advice and Communications departments. The role will develop and lead on a range of strategic initiatives to foster awareness and develop an increasingly positive perception of the Union through the enhancement of, and engagement in the Unions’ democratic and representative functions.

The preferred candidate will be able to demonstrate extensive experience of leading multi-functional teams through complex projects within a busy customer-focussed environment combined with outstanding stakeholder relationship management and communication skills to have achieved defined strategic outcomes. A clear ability to draw on your understanding of key issues affecting students in the Higher Education sector and the role of Students’ Unions in the Higher Education setting. You will be able to turn research into strategic goals and then into student led initiatives, evidencing the benefits and impact we have on the lives of students.

It is likely the successful candidate will have worked in a similar environment, where the focus has been on stakeholder engagement and the development of a unique brand, which has been effectively communicated and understood internally and externally.

We are happy to explore this vacancy with existing senior managers who would like to develop this new role, or experienced managers who are looking for that next step into a director’s role.

Applications should consist of a CV accompanied by a covering letter addressing the criteria in the Person Specification. The deadline for receipt of applications is strictly midnight 1st March, 2017.

Interviews will be held on 13th March, 2017.
