Fellow medics,
Biomed should be a safe place you can feel free to be yourself at and thrive!
Voicing our say as students, bringing about wanted change to our course and adding new opportunities to everyone is the intention.
Who am I?
Natalie, medicine lover, musician, outgoing…
Where you can find me:Out and about in nature, climbing, playing musicor studying.
So feel free to start a conversation anytime you see me! And ask away any crazy medical questions you may have.
Experience:
-Volunteering at the Royal Free Hospital in A&E, most wards, blood rooms, fundraising, discharge lounge, running errands, pharmacy pick ups, collecting patients and selling food to patients who weren’t able to leave the ward.
-Work experience at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital with helping doctors after delivering neonates, Neonatal intensive care unit, High dependency unit, Labour ward, Haematology and oncology wards.
-Fundraising for Great Ormond Street Hospital by running up 37 flights of steps (managed to run it in 8.5 minutes)!
-Ambulance trained since 2015 with St John ambulance and have worked at events such as the London marathon. 2 hours training every week in first aid, communication, care on duty and team work.
-MDA ambulance services in summer when I was abroad on holiday. 8 hour shifts, treating and transporting emergency cases to A&E.
Why choose me?
I would like to take responsibility for biomed and to follow through with suggestions that we would all like.
-I have lead 6th form at my previous school, helped tutor other psychology students at school, mentored younger students who wanted to apply for medicine (I provided them with resources and made sure they were meeting all the deadlines needed for a successful application). And I've planned events and participated in them too. For example I set up a fund raising gig and we had many visitors coming in to watch us perform. My band and my friend's band performed and blasted some classic teenage band music! We raised £200 for great Ormond Street Hospital.
-Your voice will be amplified and tailored to your expectations. So let me know any changes or improvements you would like to see -as we can all bring about change!
-Someone you can come to for help or advice about anything and anytime.
What I would like to bring to biomed:
-A place all of us can meet for some group study time where anyone can come along and bring any questions they may have and we can work through them together.
- Covid19 friendly events were we can meet others in our course and socialise.
-Catch up sessions for anyone feeling add if they're talking behind or struggling.
-Game / movie / music nights.
Biomed vs medicine
I understand there are biomedical lovers, medicine lovers and perhaps some people that are still unsure of how they've ended up here however everyone is welcome and we can grow together.
Biomedics tend to stay in the labs analysing results, researching and calculating behind closed doors while doctors are out in the front line with the patients. Very similar content learnt but a very different job role. Most medical fields focus on short term fixes, while biomed is unique as it focuses on permanent cures for illnesses. Shadowing doctors at Chelsea and Westminster hospital showed me the importance of biology in medicine. Most patients in hospitals require a cure and not just treatment to survive.
Both courses require an abundance of hard work as we will have great responsibility put on us. This is why I would be more than glad to represent all of you and to help whenever.
REMEMBER!!!
Uni is about studying hard to be able to party hard. Medics are known to party the hardest, which I think is well deserved as we will be working very hard.
