I am vying for the postion of Student Rep BME based on the following objectives:

1) Members of the BAME community require support in creating a favourable environment for learning based on their holistic needs. This is a requirement, where their diversity is seen as a positive contribution that is recognised and is of value to academia and the learning environment.

2)  As the Student Rep I aim to champion the cause of the BME community, to advocate on their behalf and encourage inclusion, participation and recognition.

3) There is need for greater representation of the BME community within academia, an advocate is needed to work in partnership with teaching staff of all levels. As a Nigerian born male with Italian Citizenship now residing permanently in the UK, I have experienced oppression, racism, victimisation and recognise marginalisation in it's many forms. I have advocated for the under priviledged; I have empowered those feeling disempowered and recognise the disparities between clients, professionals, BME community and non BME community, able bodied and disabled, atheist and those of practising faiths. My non discriminatory approach when working and supporting others is a skill and a natural part of my character.

4) My focus is to bridge the divide between the BAME and non BME groups; whilst ensuring a professional, respectful voice is employed to encourage professional and social cohesion. Racism cannot co-exist where there is open mindness, transparency, mutual respect for colleagues, an acceptance of all, equalitarian approaches and a celebration of diversity in droves.

5) I am realistic that attainment of the above will at times be challenging; however I am quietly confident, with my skills, approach, value base and mindset that my objectives can be met, as long we all work together, whereby each one, will teach one.  I am passionate about people, their wellbeing, holistic needs and overall development, which is why I am applying for this role. We are part of the solution and must be the change we want to see.

I do feel with my enthusiasm, honest approach coupled with my abiity to undertake this role; I know I can meet the needs of our people, to serve you and advocate on your behalf, if you are willing to provide me with the opportunity to do so.
