Creating a safe space and a community within Anglia Ruskin University for LGBTQ+ individuals.
Creating a safe space and a community for LGBTQ+ individuals at Anglia Ruskin University Cambridge is paramount to achieving a good student experience. I will aim to do this by starting the LGBTQIA+ Society. The society will allow us to hold regular events such as socials, raise awareness of LGBTQ+ issues and create an inclusive safe space for all at the university. Implementing this will allow students to network, meet other students in a safe way and provide them with the freedom to be able to discuss any problems they may be experiencing in a safe, nonjudgmental and informal setting.
Implementing an anonymous reporting box and raising awareness for abuse and sexual assault.
It is vital that as a university that Anglia Ruskin raises awareness for abuse and sexual assault and what to do if anyone is ever in that situation. I would suggest tackling this by adding leaflets on both sexual assault and abuse in the leaflet stand outside the I-Centre and various other places within the university such as in halls of residence and in the student union. One thing which may prove helpful would be to send a mass email to students providing them phone numbers and information about the above issues. I would also be collaborating with other reps such as the womans rep to spread awareness. Additionally, I am working with the LGBTQIA+ society to produce multiple reporting boxes which will allow students to anonymously report their concerns and subsequent ways we might be able to improve the university. It will also allow them to tip off issues such as homophobia which may occur within the university.
Promoting inclusivity to LGBTQ+ students in S.T.E.M.
Promoting inclusivity in STEM subjects throughout the university is extremely important to allow LGBTQ+ the opportunity to thrive at Anglia Ruskin. I will do this by implementing the rainbow lanyard initiative which myself and those on the LGBTQIA+ society committee are trying to implement. This will be beneficial as it will hopefully help to allow lecturers show their support for the LGBTQ+ community. This will also hopefully promote a healthy dialogue between students and their lecturers.
Mental health awareness for LGBTQ+ individuals.
With statistics that show people in the LGBTQ+ community are more likely to encounter mental illness and commit suicide it is increasingly important to educate students where in the university they can get support. I will attempt to do this by sending emails to students containing information regarding where to get support. I will also try and provide leaflets with information on where people can access support outside the icentre, at the wellbeing centre and throughout the university.
