At the SU Awards we can celebrate the hard effort our student staff put into ARU Students' Union! Kayleigh Tonkins shared with us how it felt to win the Student Staff Award at the SU Awards 2017.

How does it feel to win the Student Staff Award?

It feels amazing to have won this award, I am already immensely proud to say I work for the Students’ Union however, being named Student Staff of the year in Chelmsford really is an honour and it’s a wonderful achievement.

What’s the best thing about being a part of the student staff team?

The answer is in the question, it’s the team. I am so lucky to have the chance to work with such hard working and talented individuals. Each and every one of them has made me feel so at home in the union and has made my experience as a student staff member so enjoyable.

How has working for Anglia Ruskin Students’ Union changed/developed you as a person?

It has made me more aware of the issues that are surrounding my university experience and has opened my eyes to all of the hard work that the union does for their students.

What’s your proudest moment as a member of student staff?

It has to be winning this award, I already felt like a valued member of the team but this has really cemented that for me. I am already proud to say I am a member of this union as a student and to have the opportunity to work with such a great team and win this award was a very proud moment for me.

Which skills have you discovered/developed in your role?

Since working at the Students’ Union I have learnt a lot about myself. For example I am able to deal with multiple tasks and carry them out to a high standard whilst under time pressures, I knew I was able to do this as a student however in a working environment this has proved invaluable experience. I have also discovered that if you try hard enough, Microsoft Excel can be your best friend, not an enemy!

Finally, what would you say to anyone considering becoming part of the student staff team?

Do it! I have learnt so much about myself in such a short period of time and I’ve enjoyed every second of my time at the union. You also benefit from being paid the living wage and a cap on your hours so you never have to do more than 20 so it does not interrupt your studies.
