As a Union we have made many changes this year some small constant changes like making our website more accessible, increasing personalised news articles and worked on officer campaigns to support international and EU students.

This article will go on to discuss departmental updates from Activities and SU volunteering teams on changes you have helped them make.

SU Volunteering

This year the volunteering team implemented Volunteering Skills Workshops which have been well attended by international students. These sessions support all students to develop key skills, feel confident in public speaking, in a safe and welcoming environment.

The volunteering team has been working with the university on the universities tier 4 visa awareness making sure that tier 4 students in internal voluntary roles are declared to be the EB. The Volunteer Centre now offer 1-2-1 meetings with international students to explain their tier 4 responsibilities. Over the summer, they are working on creating a platform for this on their website making it much more accessible! Go to our website to find out how you can get involved

Activities Team

Your feedback has helped us shape events you would like to see run here at ARU SU. From this quizzes, city trips, punting and Global Week will be continued, and more events like Networking opportunities, and community building opportunities will be added in. Based upon student feedback we received this year, cultural events was one of the most requested activities to be hosted. Therefore, we will be planning more cultural and faith events next semester and alongside the University Chaplaincy and International Office on this.

You said… we listened! You have requested more support for our commuting students and January starters with this feedback we have now started live streaming events making this more accessible for our distance learners and commuters. As a result of your feedback we have now introduced discount society memberships for January starters and exchange students who only join half way through a societies year.

We want to provide you with an SU you feel part of, an SU you feel proud of and an SU that provides a community for you. To better support our students we have rebranded the international orientation events to ‘Welcome’ events as International students mentioned in feedback that they wanted more integrated opportunities to meet home students, we have viewed the language we use on our events on the SU website to make sure that it is clear and accessible for all demographics of students

As an officer, I loved getting involved with Global Week this year!  A week-long celebration of community and diversity, bring together home, International and EU students together. If you want to know how to run a cultural society, get more involved in Global Week or find out what other Cultural Events we are running throughout the year go to our website.

Mary Copsey – Officer Update

I have been working on creating an environment where international and EU students will feel part of the community – through the international games nights!

‘95% said they enjoyed the event and provided the opportunity to network.

By attending these events you not only get a great evening and meet others. But you also influence the types of events your SU will run for you.

I have also worked with students and developed a Brexit policy – taking action against Hate crime! Worked with the university to provide a clear understanding of academic support for our international and EU students and implemented changes with student services communications with students, reviewing language that is used. To better support you through your academia, myself alongside students created a video on how to prevent assessment offences, including academic top tips! If you are worried about academic offences remember you can always talk to our independent free Advice Service - book an appointment here.

I am working with the SU on developing the “Inclusion Fund” to be more inclusive and looking at making sure our student jobs are accessible and available for all demographics of students.  If you would like to work with us, we are hiring now.

Remember, if you would like to see something improved or want to know some of the changes not in this video comment below or go to our website!
