hearts on a blue wall

What do you study?

I am currently in my first year of BSc Psychology with Clinical Psychology

Would you like us to direct students to a specific social media platform to reach you on? Or should they contact you by email only?

My email, tle109@student.aru.ac.uk or my Instagram @tieganleigharu are both places where I would love to hear from students!

What are your campaigns/ what would you like to achieve for students this year?

This year one of my biggest focuses is the accessibility equality network, a space on the SU website for disabled students to be able to let me know of any concerns they may have so we can make the campus more accessible! I would also like to increase awareness of the sunflower lanyard scheme, especially for lecturers so they know how best to support students who disclose a hidden disability.

Another cause I would like to work on this year is to increase awareness of support and resources for students with hidden disabilities such as autism or ADHD that affects their learning, to help them achieve their goals and be supported in their studies as much as possible.

Why are you passionate about this project idea?

I am passionate about these projects because I have struggled for so long academically due to my disabilities and I want to create a positive impact for other disabled students so that we can all achieve our goals despite the challenges we may face. I truly believe that an accessible university environment can change the lives and futures of our students and that by supporting disabled students we make the university as a whole a better place.

As someone who struggles with mobility issues and autism, as well as mental health conditions, I know what it is like to struggle in an academic environment due to a lack of accessibility and support, and I am passionate about making these changes so ARU can become a place where no disabled student has to feel like they cannot succeed due to their condition.

What made you stand to be a Rep?

I took part in the election because i want to make a difference to the lives of students like me, who are often overlooked, so that we can achieve our full potential and be supported by the institution that we are putting so much of our energy and money into being a part of.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years’ time?

In five years time I hope to be studying for my PHD in child clinical psychology.
