Social Work

Our society aims to encourage interactions between members throughout the year with different social events/ learning opportunities and new experiences

By bringing together like-minded individuals we can broaden our own knowledge and develop our skills for the future as social workers, making a difference within the university and the wider community, as well as making the most of our social work course. We hope this will provide people with the platform to share ideas about events linked with social work, gain some experience and be around people who are going through similar experiences within the course. For example, with assignments and deadlines. The Society also holds events to raise awareness and fundraise for good causes.

Founded in 2017 the Social Work Society has continued to grow in strength, with previous events including:

  • "A sleep easy, sleep rough event" for YMCA
    • Members spent the whole night awake and outside raising money for young homelessness in Essex.
  • An online auction in aid of Caritas Anchor House
    • We raised over £1900 for a homeless charity in Newham!
  • The foodbank challenge - raising awareness and funds for the Trussell Trust foodbanks.
    • For this challenge members spent the week living on foodbank rations and blogged about the experience whilst raising sponsorship and donations.
  • Collecting 25 bin bags full of coats to send to refugees in Calais!
  • Securing funding for a solution focused conference that:
    • This involved a day filled with workshops, guest speakers, useful information and guidance on how to best work with others.

We ultimately want to give people who are interested in social work a place where they can build their CV and also network for our futures outside of the university, and make a difference to the local community, as well as having lots of fun and making some lifelong friends in the process.
