Alan Marks - Big Pitch Champion 2017!

3D Printable wind turbines - securing our future energy sources.

On Thursday 4th May Alan Marks was named one of the Big Pitch winners 2017, he picked up two awards in addtion to the main prize: a year's membership of the FSB (Federation of Small Businesses) which is a great thing to be a part of to help with networking and contacts , and also Allia, a Cambridge business startup lab with all kinds of technical support and help.

The whole process was exciting to be a part of, winning an event which is open to the whole of the university is quite an achievement.  In particular the feedback from the judges was quite extraordinary.  Alan has run businesses before in Internet marketing, so was trying to apply the same principles to another field.

Coming into engineeering from a different background means the pitch wasn't a typical 'engineers pitch'. After getting several laughs during the pitch, one judge said he should consider a side career in standup.  One more thing to workshop perhaps?

What next?

With the end of the course looming, now is a great time to be setting up a business.  The world is more receptive to renewables than ever before, so it is exciting times for engineers like Alan.

The Big Pitch is a great way for young entrepreneurs to get their feet wet in a  business environment, with ideas and mentoring, similar to a mini MBa to learn how to set up a business in a supportive envirnment, with just enough competition to help keep the edge.

Alan is a third year Mechanical Engineering (BEng) Student and he has been a Committee Member of several Societies for three years, learning and passing on wisdom and Committee experience to his peers.
