The Group Chat is your space to discuss the big issues on campus and help us make key decisions on the things that affect you throughout your journey at ARU. Every student is invited and encouraged to come along to be an integral part of our conversation and decision making. Led by students, you will also hear updates from officers and exec committee members. You will have an opportunity to ask them questions and hold them to account.

So, want to be a Group Chat student chair and lead the meeting next year?

There will be an elected Chair of Student Members Meetings (also known as SMM / The Group Chat) at each of the Core campuses; Chelmsford, Cambridge and Peterborough during the April 2020 Group Chat. 

 

Requests for expressions of interest will be advertised for at least a 14 day period before the first SMM and candidates will be contacted to discuss the opportunity.

 

A paper ballot election will take place in the room during first SMM of the year. The ballot will be administrated by the Deputy Returning Officer or a nominee. Candidates will be given an opportunity to address the SMM on their home campus for 2 minutes prior to balloting.

 

The elected Chair will undertake their role on the day of election and will chair SSM held on their campus until the election of a new Chair.

 

Interested in submitting policy?

Policy is a representative or political direction for the Union. Student Members may submit policy ideas to the Democracy Coordinator at least 21 days prior to the SMM. Students will be contacted to discuss their idea. Contact Rachel Wilkenson at r.wilkenson@angliastudent.com for more information. 

 

Policy ideas will be raised at the SMM for discussion by Student Members and actions will be allocated for the development of the policy idea into a policy proposal. Actions may include further student consultation, research and proposal writing.

 

Student Members and the Trustee Board may submit policy proposals for consideration by SMM at least 14 days prior to the final SMM of the academic year. Policy proposals will be included for discussion at the SMM. Voting will take place online following the closure of the meeting for at least 48 hours. All Student Members have the right to vote.

Want to know how you can hold your elected officers to account?

At all SMM there will be an opportunity for Executive Committee members to be held to account for their work.

 

Full Time members of the Executive Committee will provide an update report on work they have done and future plans, at least 14 days prior to the SMM for circulation to all students. This may include circulation by email and social media and via the website

 

 Reports may take the form of a video or written update.

 

Part Time members of the Executive Committee will be given the opportunity to address the SMM and provide verbal updates.

 

The SMM will also receive a written summary of Executive Committee activity based on the minutes of Executive Committee meetings and confirmed by the Chair of the Executive Committee.

 

Students will have the opportunity to raise questions relating to the Executive Committee reports and updates during the SMM, which will be recorded in the minutes. This may include requests to change a section of a report or the direction of future work.

 

Student members will be asked to accept the reports once questions are completed by ‘show of hands’

 

Should a student member wish to raise a motion of censure against a member of the Executive Committee for not fulfilling the work of the Student Members without good reason, a statement and evidence should be submitted in writing to the Deputy Returning Officer (e.howes@angliastudent.com) at least 14 days prior to the SMM.

The Executive Committee member to be censured will be notified of the censure motion at least 10 days prior to SMM. The member concerned will be given the opportunity to respond to the motion during the SMM. This will be followed by a paper ballot; Student Members will be asked to approve or decline the motion of censure.
