Whilst Cambridge campus enjoys dedicated prayer spaces, I saw that Chelmsford students were still having to make do with temporary space in Mildmay. So working with student societies and ARU, we've gotten a commitment to building permanent prayer spaces for all our students!
This year I have been working on the establishment of a prayer space as one of my Students’ Union campaigns; liaising with many people from university management, as well as student societies. I wanted to update you on its current progress, and future developments coming next academic year!
The design plan and any other requirements for the prayer space have been completed, the project approved by ARU, and the completion date has been confirmed for the 8th of September 2023, just in time for Welcome Week!
Building work will start as soon as possible after the next stages of this project are complete, such as costing and tender etc. I will be checking on the progress of this project regularly and via meetings with the assigned project manager.
The Students’ Union will also be releasing communications to students about the development of this space; I will liaise with ARU and the Islamic Society committee/their society coordinators for any adjustments once these have been made, so keep an eye on our social media pages for updates!
It is a firm belief of mine that any student; of any faith, should have space to pray whilst on campus. This is especially important during religious observances such as Ramadan; Lent, and Passover, to name a few! Now Chelmsford students will be able to practice their faith whenever they need it, something which I am extremely happy to see and proud of.
