It’s completely normal to feel worried about making friends as a January starter. But the important thing to remember is, even though most people generally start in September, you won’t be the only one starting in January. There will be plenty of others in the same boat as you! But here are some tips to make friends as a January starter.
Talk to your classmates
The number one way to make friends as a January starter is to talk to your class mates. They will be experiencing the exact same feelings as you, and you’ll be able to bond. You’re also like-minded, as you’ll be studying the same degree, so you’ll share mutual ground early on!
Join a society or a club
With so many societies to join, you can take part in anything that takes your fancy. And if nothing sounds good to you, then you can always start your own. It’s a great way to meet people with the same interests as you, and hang out with them!
Check out events on campus
ARU Students’ Union runs many events throughout the year, such as club nights, trips, and other events. It’s worth keeping an eye out on the events calendar, and taking part in whatever takes your interest, as this is the perfect way to meet new people. By going to a new place or trying out a new activity together, you’ll be able to share your mutual interest and excitement!
ARU Students’ Union offers so many volunteering opportunities, with something to suit everyone. Volunteering is not only a great way to add to your CV and build new skills, but it’s a perfect opportunity to meet new people. You’ll be able to bond with the people you’re working with, and also the people you are helping along the way.
Take part in the Elections!
The March Elections are coming up. This is where the whole of ARU votes on which students should represent the entire Students' Union. This is a fantastic opportunity to get involved with, and a great way of making new friends!
You'll make friends in no time!
