Nicky Milner:
In my presentation I will give an overview of two of our three two-week international ARU Community Experience projects in Botswana and Jimma (Ethiopia). These transformative education projects are open to everyone with no previous knowledge or skills required. ?
Mission Botswana has been running since 2014 and is currently working with the SOS Children’s Village in Tlokweng, Gaborone. We work with the local community to develop sustainable projects which are led by our team of staff, student and alumni volunteers from ARU. Past projects include basic building maintenance and repurposing an empty room as a social community space and library for staff and children of the SOS Village. The trip ends with a two night stay in an eco-lodge at Mosetlha Bush camp and four safari drives in Madikwe Game Reserve, South Africa.
A second new project is being developed with Jimma University in Ethiopia. We will work with the local community of Jimma and staff and students from Jimma University to run sustainable medical and public health and education projects which involve the acquisition of knowledge and skills from the local people. This trip includes a visit to a local coffee plantation and local museums.
