We have been taking students to stay in Sainji, a small village in the foothills of the Indian Himalayas since 2015. Each year volunteers are encouraged to use their degree knowledge and skills to make a difference to the people who live there. We have, for example run first aid workshops, taught teenagers about puberty, worked on water and sanitation projects and numerous projects in the local primary school. Money that volunteers have raised have paid for local people to lay a concrete floor in the school and build a new outdoor classroom. By participating in this programme, however, you are likely to gain far more than you are able to give. This will include a deep experiential understanding of the challenges and complexities of sustainable development, and few of our volunteers are likely to forget the experiences they had and friendships they forged.
