Martial Arts - Self Defence
Welcome to the Martial Arts page! Your 3 coaches have trained in a variety of backgrounds. The idea of this society is to bring together the core aspects of each of these martial arts that we believe are essential in self defence.
- Jiu Jitsu (throwing, grappling, weapons work, locks)
- Karate (striking, kicking)
- Judo (throwing, grappling)
- Kempo (throwing, striking, kicking, weapons work)
- General awareness and classic self defence
Hello! Hope you've all been keeping well!
We're glad to say we're back again this year although with some restrictions for the 1st trimester at least!
Due to COVID-19, we're focusing more on distanced martial arts (reading situations, flexibility, fitness, rolling, break falling, kicking etc). We’ll also be seeing a change in venue as Sawyer’s Gym has been converted to office space. We will be training on the green space outside the School of Medicine when weather is good, and potentially Mildmay gym as a wet weather option.
To ensure social distancing can be maintained, we’ll be training 5m apart at all times (as droplet spread increases with exercise). With the possibility of current restrictions being increased, groups may be limited to 6 persons. In which case, we will have 2/3 groups of 6, 10m apart. But we will adapt to regulations and keep you all in the loop!
To reduce length of exposure to one another, sessions will be held for 45 minutes rather than 1.5hrs. These sessions will be on Tuesdays and Fridays from 16:30 to 17:15.
We cannot stress enough, if you feel under the weather please DO NOT come to the training session. We will be happy to run a Zoom session for you so you can still get involved.
Memberships are up! This year we’ll be giving free t-shirts to the 1st 15 members + a roll mat for all who join.
Looking forward to seeing you all soon. Training starts on 15th September!
1 taster session will be avaiable to freshers, although activities insurance is required.
