Black History Month

BLACK HISTORY MONTH

Your opportunity to celebrate, share and engage with Black History Month at ARU.

Black History Month at ARU will be running from the 1st - 31st October 2021. We aim to bring you a range of educational events, social opportunities and impactful experiences.

What is Black History Month?

Black History Month is a celebration of Black identity, and honours the enormous contribution of Black figures on British and global history. This October, events and activities planned by the Race Equality Advocates in partnership with your Students' Union will be available all month long. From fun, to inspirational, to informative, there’s something for everyone! Check out the full events list here and find out more about how you can get involved.

What's on during Black History Month?

Each year we put on a month of events to celebrate the diversity of our community and allow you, the students, to share your passions and interests. This year, we are proud to support ARU's Race Equality Advocates, a group of students whose aim is to champion student voices on campus and to spark real change in our community. Take a look at the events below and make sure to get involved.

Creating Change on your campus

We spoke to Demi, one of our Senior rep. coordinators about how our students can make real change on campus. Here's what they had to say...

At ARU Students' Union part of our Executive Committee is made up of our Campaign and Liberation Reps. Among these are our Black & Minority Ethnic Students' Reps. These reps are elected by their fellow self-defined BME students to run campaigns and champion and represent the views and voices of marginalised students at ARU. Our BME Students' Rep will work with their fellow Liberation Reps to make sure that all students at ARU have their voices heard and have access to representation from the classroom to the boardroom and beyond.

We are currently looking for a BME Students' Rep in Cambridge. Do you want to make a difference to the student experience at ARU and be the voice of our students of colour? Nominations are open until midday October 8th, and voting runs from 9am October 9th to 5pm October 17th. Be the change you want to see and apply here.
