The UK Supreme Court recently ruled that the terms “woman” and “sex” in the Equality Act 2010 refers specifically to biological women and biological sex. This excludes transgender women who hold gender recognition certificates (GRCs).  Your elected Officers of ARU Students’ Union want to reaffirm our commitment to providing safe and inclusive spaces for our members.

Our services and facilities are open to use by all, regardless of gender.

We know this ruling could be distressing, especially for our transgender student members and their loved ones. There are several support services provided by ARU Students’ Union, ARU, and the local community. We encourage students impacted or troubled by this ruling to use these services. You are not alone.

  • ARU Students’ Union Advice Service – If you feel that you wish to make a formal complaint against the university or another student, you can contact our Advice Service
  • Queer Collective society – A Cambridge-based community of students who are looking to make a difference at ARU and the surrounding areas. If you're an LGBTQ+ student at ARU and looking to connect with like-minded people, feel free to join. Everyone is welcome.
  • ARU Students’ Union's Gender Expression Fund - We operate a Gender Expression Fund to help transgender students access financial support for social transitioning. All details of what we can support you with and how to apply for the GEF can be found in the link provided.
  • Counselling and Wellbeing support - The Counselling and Wellbeing Service is available to all ARU students and offers a free and confidential service to promote mental health and wellbeing.
  • The Kite Trust – The Kite Trust wants to create an inclusive society where LGBTQ+ young people are healthy, successful and celebrated. Our work supports the wellbeing and creativity of LGBTQ+ young people in Cambridgeshire, Peterborough and surrounding areas through information, support and groups.
  • The Out House – An Essex-based charity providing safe and supportive spaces for LGBT+ people in the Chelmsford (and surrounding areas). They have information, support, and meet-up groups.
