Campaign Reflection - Bidets

Bidet showers, or water jets, are a staple in toilets around the world. Data suggests that over 50% of the global population uses water as a normal toilet habit.

At ARU, students come from over 100 countries, with international students being a predominant audience.

Currently, students who use bidets at home often resort to carrying a water bottle with them when they visit the toilet, which is neither ideal nor in line with the university’s vision of diversity and inclusion. Alternatively, they may hold the urge to use the toilet until they return home, which is detrimental to their well-being.

I advocated for the needs of our students, and despite delays and a lack of urgency from the university estates team, I held my ground. As a result, the university has now approved £22,000 to install bidet showers at several locations in Cambridge and Chelmsford over the summer, with plans to expand the number of installations to make them more accessible. This campaign aligns with our values of sustainability, well-being, and creating a sense of belonging.

Thank you for your support.

In solidarity,

Muneeb Iqbal

President 2023-2024
