Our Skills Workshops

Please note that our Skills Workshops will be available to sign up 2 weeks before the scheduled workshop time, as stated below.

*Please note that planned Skills Workshops for trimester 2 have been postponed until further notice. We are working to replace these with online workshops in the near future*

Building on your Strengths

When trying to grow, whether professionally or personally, we often focus on improving our weaknesses. However, recognising and utilising one’s strengths can be as effective, if not more effective, way to thrive. In this workshop we will help you to identify and understand your strengths and discover ways in which you can use them to a fuller extent. We will focus on building on what you are naturally good at. We will look at how your strengths correspond with your future plans, career choices, but also how using them can be built into your daily routine in order to increase your well-being.

Conflict Management

All of us face conflict but depending on how you handle it, the consequences can be positive or negative. Whether dealing with an issue in our personal lives or working with difficult colleagues, it is a part of our lives. Conflicts may be small or large, but the ability to manage them effectively – and respond favourably – is a crucial interpersonal skill.

We’ll examine the causes of conflict and scenarios together to better understand why conflict arises. In this skills session, you'll discover your natural conflict response style and learn signs and strategies for facing conflict that will better prepare you for these situations in the future.

Creative Goal Setting

Let’s think creatively about your goals!

This workshop, running for the first time this trimester, will help you to reflect on what is important to you, what your goals are and how you can achieve them. We will use an increasingly popular facilitation method called Lego Serious Play to enhance creativity and communication allowing you to have some fun playing Lego while reflecting on your goals!

Emotional Intelligence

Emotional Intelligence (EQ) is defined as “the capacity to be aware of, control, and express one's emotions, and to handle interpersonal relationships” – all key skills not only in the workplace but in everyday life. Having a good knowledge and understanding of emotional intelligence can really help you in all walks of life; to make new friends, to feel more confident and maybe even to take on a new role at work or on your course!

This session introduces the key concepts of emotional intelligence and the characteristics of those with high EQ. Using games and group activities to develop your understanding of EQ we begin to explore how this key skill can impact on your life, with top tips to improve your own EQ.

Negotiation

The skill of negotiating is one that we use every day, whether we realise it or not and often with people who approach negotiating very differently from ourselves. From who in our house will make the tea, to the hours that we would like to work, negotiating successfully is as much a life skill as it is a business skill.

Negotiating requires us to use a range of skills including communication and problem solving. In this session we will practice some of these skills – making you a more effective negotiator at home, in your academic life and in your future careers.

Problem Solving

Did you know that Problem Solving is one of the top 5 life skills employers look for? By developing your problem-solving strategies, you can not only tackle challenges in your own life, but build a skillset that will make you valuable on a team and as a leader. This session will look at the problem-solving process and how you can take it away and apply it to solve absolutely any problem that you have!

Public Speaking

Does public speaking leave your knees shaking? Does the thought of a presentation make you sweat? Or do you just want to make better speeches? Then you need ‘Stress Free Public Speaking’!

Covering the golden rules of public speaking, top tips for controlling those nerves and easy ways to grab your audience’s attention this session is an introduction to the key skills you need to stand up and speak up.

Stress Management

Balancing the student lifestyle with many other commitments can be very stressful. Some of the things students commonly cite as causes of stress include deadlines, exams and pressure. But not all stress is bad; we need some stress to get everyday things done. Too little can lead to boredom and “rust out” – but too much can lead to “burn out”.

In this Stress Management workshop you will:

- Understand how stress affects us in different ways and how it affects YOU.

- Identify different types of stress categories and stressors to help you effectively get to the source of your problems.

- Acquire various stress management techniques to aid you in coping with daily tasks; some new, some classics.

- Plan ahead to avoid and prepare yourself for stressful situations, in and out of university.

- Set achievable targets to help you realise a happier and stress-free lifestyle.

Let’s be honest, we could all do with a little less stress in our life, let’s find some ways to manage it together!

Time Management

Do you struggle with organising your time? Are you often frantically completing coursework the night before the deadline? You might need to improve your Time Management skills!

This session aims to help you start to build the ability to manage your time effectively through understanding the benefits of time management, recognising common barriers to getting things done, and providing some tools for structuring time in a productive way. You will find out if you are a ‘Fridge Cleaner’ (and just what that means!), set SMART goals, and learn how to prioritise tasks, taking away top tips for time management and the ability to manage your time for the future.

Skills Reflection Workshop

Whilst you are volunteering you are learning and developing invaluable life skills that makes you more employable. The final step to getting that first graduate job is your ability to showcase these skills in a job interview and to be confident in how your skills can contribute to the success of your potential new employer.

In this session we will boost your recruitability by discussing your volunteering experiences and helping you to identify and log the skills you have used on your volunteering profile.
