You’ve probably heard it all before – ‘join a society straight away….it’s the best way to make friends…it can build your CV!’ And, whilst you may be thinking it’s time to change the record, here at ARU SU, we will never stop shouting about our brilliant sports clubs and societies so we’re here to tell you all about why you should join one of them, especially in your first year…

Let’s start with the obvious.

Joining a sports club or society is a sure-fire way to meet like-minded people, just by being there you’ll already have something common with other members! Clubs and societies are made up of students from across the university, all courses, all ages, all new, prospective friends for you. By widening your social network outside of just your new housemates, you’ll get the opportunity to make lots of new friends, who knows you might meet the Tina Fey to your Amy Poehler.

Your university experience.

Clubs and Societies run a whole host of exciting events throughout the year. From socials to conferences, matches to trips, there’s something going on pretty much all year round! In your time at ARU, we want you to have as many brilliant experiences as possible and Clubs and Societies are certainly a gateway to more experiences than you’ve ever had before.

‘Build me [your CV] up buttercup’

Aside from the obvious benefits to your social life, clubs and societies can also offer you the opportunity to learn new skills, all of which can be added to your CV ready for those all-important interviews. Public speaking, confidence, team work, leadership and project management are just a few of the many skills you’ll pick up along the way. How good is that? You can enjoy events and improve your social life, all whilst working on your employability.

Lead and Change.

In your time at ARU, you might also get the opportunity to start your own group or take over the reigns for an existing club or society. With support and guidance from your Activities Team, you could bring your ideas to life – want to take your club or society abroad? We can do that. Want to plan a huge event to celebrate something special to you and your group? We can do that too. Want to run a campaign which might change the way the university works? Yep we can do that too.

Don’t believe us? Here’s a few quotes from some current society members. If these don’t convince you that joining a club or society is the best way to go, then we don’t know what will!
