Romanian student Sarmiza Bilcescu was the first woman to gain admission to Paris Law School (1884). In 1887 Miss Bilcescu became the first woman in Europe to receive a PHD in Law and to become a lawyer.

Grigor Dimitrov is a Bulgarian professional tennis player. His career-high ATP singles ranking is world No. 3, which he achieved in November 2017 after winning the ATP Finals.

Marco Polo (15 September, 1254 – January 8, 1324) was a Venetian merchant, explorer, and writer who travelled through Asia along the Silk Road between 1271 and 1295. His travels are recorded in The Travels of Marco Polo (also known as Book of the Marvels of the World and Il Milione, c. 1300), a book that described to Europeans the then mysterious culture and inner workings of the Eastern world, including the wealth and great size of the Mongol Empire and China in the Yuan Dynasty, giving their first comprehensive look into China, Persia, India, Japan and other Asian cities and countries.

Fernando António Nogueira Pessoa (13 June 1888 – 30 November 1935) was a Portuguese poet, writer, literary critic, translator, publisher and philosopher, described as one of the most significant literary figures of the 20th century and one of the greatest poets in the Portuguese language. He also wrote in and translated from English and French.

Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840 – 1893) was a Russian composer of the Romantic period. He was the first Russian composer whose music made a lasting impression internationally. There was scant opportunity for a musical career in Russia at the time and no system of public music education. When an opportunity for such an education arose, he entered the nascent Saint Petersburg Conservatory, and graduated in 1865. The formal Western-oriented teaching that he received there set him apart from composers of the contemporary nationalist movement embodied in Russia.

But few know that Francesco Illy, creator of the automatic steam espresso coffee machine, was born in the Romanian city of Timisoara. He then moved to Italy where he opened its business, the world-known coffee roasting company Illy Caffe
