Michael Turner

Hello all!

My name is Michael Turner, (he/him), and I wish to continue in the position as your trans rep in Cambridge.

I am currenly a second year politics student, as well as entering my second year as a committee member for ARU Student Action For Refugees. During this time, I've been able to maintain a steady balance between all of these responsibilities, amongst other extra-curriculars, such as becoming trained in mental health first aid.

Since coming into the role in June 2017, I have already acted upon 3 of my campaign pledges.

  1. I have created (and I commit to the continuation of) a frequent and inclusive trans meet up space (every Sunday)
  2. I have already organised (and will continue to organise) events in celebration, rememberence and visibility for the trans community
  3. I have already began to work on a campaign to ensure ARU bathrooms across the campus continue to become more accessible for trans students

As well as this, I have proven to be an approachable figure for both students and staff, all feeling comfortable enough to engage with me on numerous issues, ranging from the understanding of different pronouns to offering support in representing trans identities in plays, short films, and documentaries.

I also have strong links to both the LGBT Society and the LGBT Rep on our campus, as well as Cambridge Uni, which has allowed me to collaborate with them  individually on numerous occasions.

If I am to get another year in the role, I will have both the platform to continue with my current campaigns, in addition to work with students to create new policy/projects/events to further support our trans students. In particular, I think it would be helpful to create a resource for trans students to be aware of trans-friendly spaces at uni, as well as the local area.

If you need any more information about me, my role, or my campaigns, please don't hesitate to approach me in person, via email (miketurner98@outlook.com), or via social media (@ARUTransRep)

All the best,

Mike.
