#LetsGetBetterTogether – My Manifesto

About Me (James Morgans)

Hi! My name is James, I’m a second year politics student and I’m hoping to be your LGBT+ Rep for next year. So a bit about myself, I’m currently the LGBT+ Rep as well as a member of the LGBT Charity Metro based in my hometown of Greenwich, London. I march in a lot of Pride events (particularly in London) and attend protests to better the lives of LGBT people across the UK and the globe. I’m also a member of a number of societies on campus and interested in local, national and international LGBT and human rights issues. My ideas are focused around five areas: L.G.B.T.+ (Liberation, Good Health, Better Awareness, Trans* Issues and +).

Liberation

Liberation is focused around making sure all LGBT+ Students feel liberated and in a connected community. This would be done through events in The Academy, through regular forums where students can hold their rep accountable, ask them questions and suggest ideas. This will also be done by allocating an hour a week where students will be able to find me outside the SU office and discuss to me any issues they are having.

Good Health

Good Health is an issue that is key to success in University and by making sure students have both good mental, physical and sexual health it is possible to make sure they will perform to their highest standard and also make sure they are happy. My good health campaign will focus around offering safer sex methods, working towards LGBT specific counselling and also by encouraging participation in sport as well as volunteering.

Better Awareness

I believe that all students under the LGBT+ Umbrella deserve fair and equal representation by their rep and within the university community for them to feel properly liberated. Therefore I want to make sure less recognised groups such as those in the Asexual, Intersex, Pansexual and Polyamorous communities get their awareness increased. This will be done by hosting events celebrating these communities with student speakers who identify as these groups. I will also work with other liberation reps to connect LGBT students within the disabled, international, woman, Trans* and BME communities to create a network that includes as many students as possible.

Trans* Issues

By continuing my commitment to Gender Neutral Toilets being introduced on every building within Cambridge campus I hope to at least start to help liberate Trans* Students. Liberation of Trans* students and concern of issues facing them will also be performed by working closely alongside the Trans* Rep to make sure that our students are represented correctly and their issues are respected and worked towards correctly.

+

+ Unlike a lot of the other areas I’m focusing on does not have a specific purpose. It is there to point out that all those these are the main areas I wish to focus on over the next year, any ideas given to me by students will always be considered by me and where possible worked into a part of my policy. However this also includes added representation in areas such as close work with the LGBT society and the NUS Conference which is a key part of making sure the LGBT are well represented.
