Students in the Red - National Day of Action
UPDATE - January 2009
We hope you have all had a relaxing holiday but just to let you know the Higher Education Funding Campaign hasn’t stopped.
At the end of last semester we rounded up as many signed letters as possible and hand delivered these to the House of Commons. In the end we managed to reach over 45 different MPs so thankyou to those of you who filled the letter protest in and you should be expecting a response any time now.
The Students’ Union also wrote accompanying letters and is currently receiving responses so we will keep you updated when we find out more.
The fight for a fairer Higher Education Funding System is still very much underway and as we enter 2009 a model for a new system, constructed by NUS with the input of Unions throughout the country is currently being constructed.
Don’t stop showing your support for this campaign by sharing stories and experiences of your funding nightmares. We will keep you updated.

The Day of Action was a great success with Students from Anglia Ruskin, Cambridge University, UEA and UCS turning up to fight on behalf of all students.
An article showing that it does make a difference!
John Denham, the Higher Education Secretary, is starting a review of funding this week, ahead of next year's decision on whether to raise the £3,000 cap on student tuition fees. He said that changes were needed to help British universities to compete over the next 15 years, as emerging countries pour resources into education. The recession is expected to increase demand as people seek higher skills or retraining after redundancy....for the full article click the link below!

We will continue to fight for the Government to review the Higher Education funding system but obviously nothing will happen without you.
In the next few weeks the Anglia Ruskin Sabbatical officers will continue to hold the wall of debt outside the Students Union offices and they will be out and about talking students and creating a letter campaign.
When we get feedback from the MP about the day of action we will let you know, so don't leave this group just yet, there's much more to come!

Students throughout East Anglia to descend upon Cambridge for mass protest!
Anglia Ruskin Students’ Union, Cambridge University Students’ Union, the Union of UEA Students, University Campus Suffolk Students’ Union and Local Sixth Forms are uniting forces for a regional day of action.
When: Wednesday 5th Nov
Where: Meet at 11.30 outside the library
(A mini bus will be provided for students in Chelmsford and will leave campus at 10am from outside the Tindal Building)
Why: We will come together to declaim the current system for funding education, highlighting the skyrocketing levels of debt students experience under the "top-up fees" system. The demonstration will also highlight the utter failure of the government to present any viable alternatives. The students demand that an open and rigorous debate about systems of funding be held, rather than the current refusal to communicate.
This protest takes place on the "Day of Action" called by the National Union of Students, and looks to be one of the year's most significant expressions of student rejection of the HE funding system. Since the government's imposition of top-up fees in 2006, British students have experienced historically unprecedented levels of student debt. The cap which keeps tuition fees at £3,000 per annum is to be reviewed in 2009, introducing the possibility of much higher tuition fees and the creation of a two-tiered system in which some Universities can charge significantly more than others.
The current system for funding whilst at University really gives International and Part-Time students a raw deal where International Students are asked to ‘contribute’ any amount around £9000 and part-time students can only study once they have paid all of their fees up front.
There are many reasons in which the current system doesn’t work, for a more detailed report see www.nus.org.uk
Remember, you may not think that a demonstration will change the situation you are facing in time for it to make a difference to your study, but what about your children, your brothers and sisters, cousins, nieces and nephews – will they be able to attend University if the systems stays as it is, turning Higher Education into a market and allowing the ‘elite’ Universities to charge anything between £7,000 and £15,000 a year?
How do I get Involved?
The 1st demonstration will be held on Christ’s Pieces at 12 noon. We will then hold a second demonstration at the back of Queen’s College. If you are unsure of where these places are or don’t know how to get between them, we have a suggested route.
Anglia Ruskin Students:
We will be hosting a Wall of Debt on the Cambridge and Chelmsford campuses from 29th October – come along and write down your debt, compare with your friends and be astounded by the levels you see.
On Wednesday 5th November meet at 11.30am outside the library on the Cambridge Campus- Wear Red.
(A mini bus will be provided from the Chelmsford Campus leaving from the front of Tinal at 10am)
We are aware that sports teams may have fixtures, therefore we will be providing all teams with red tape to tie around their arms, we ask you to take a photograph of the two teams together to show your support.
We also need as many people as possible to be as creative as possible - we need people to make banners and placards as well as wear t-shirts and marshal the event.
