25% Less Bursary, 100% Less Choice

bursaryUPDATE 07.08.08

Good news for all current students of Anglia Ruskin University: The University has decided to permanently offer choice on how students spend their bursary and scholarship money.  Our President and Communications Officer had a meeting with the Vice Chancellor on Friday where they put forward all your views on the Aspire Card proposal. Because so many of you were against the plans and filled out the survey, the union was able to put forward an argument which couldn't be ignored and from now on all students entitled to a bursary or scholarship will get the choice between the aspire card or cash.

The executive would like to thank all of you who joined the facebook group and wrote on the wall or filled out the survey. Your voice and opinions have made a significant difference and without you we would not have managed to make this change.

Please let us know of anything you want us to campaign on in the future or indeed if you would like to help us campaign on issues which affect students. All of the officers details are on the website or feel free to come into one of our offices which are located in Chelmsford (1st floor Tindal Building) and Cambridge (1st floor Helmore).

Once again thanks to those who filled out the survey and wrote on the wall, and watch out for some more campaigns throughout the year.

The SU President (Nick Evangelista) will be meeting with Chief Executive of said academic bookshop company this Wednesday. He will be talking through the concerns that have been raised so far.

After meeting with the academic bookshop company Nick has arranged a follow up meeting with the Vice Chancellor (our second SU - University meeting) to again raise concerns.

Feedback from those meetings will be on this group so watch out for updated information!

NUS Support:
We have had frequent contact with NUS on this matter to receive feedback and gain support.

'In all of our contributions to the debate about bursaries we have made it clear to OFFA and to institutions that we expect them to run schemes which enable students to use the bursary money for the things they need, not what institutions ASSUME they need...I really am surprised that the proposal to tie up bursary money IN ADDITION to cutting the bursary amount...I am happy to join you in making representations to OFFA about this.' Wes Streeting - NUS President.

Please give us your support and fill out the survey.

THIS WILL EFFECT ALL FULL TIME UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS (Unless funded by the NHS)

The university is proposing that instead of students receiving their bursary in the form of a cash payment at the end of the year, students will receive an 'Aspire Card'. This card can be used to buy anything sold by an academic bookshop company (Books, Stationary and Laptops), University managed accommodation or university managed Child Care. It is important to remember that the money used for your bursary is taken from your fees and is only given back to you if you pass each semester.

In order for the Union to campaign on this issue effectively we want to know what you spent your bursary money on. Did you spend it on books, a computer, accommodation, child care? Let us know.

Also the University is proposing to place a bookshop on our main two campus’ Cambridge & Chelmsford. It is planned that the new bursary will limit you to spending the money on books (only available from the campus bookshop or their website), computers (only available from the campus bookshop or their website), University accommodation, University childcare and perhaps other negotiated deals, how do you feel about this?

Students starting this year (2008/2009) will be provided with the choice on whether they receive the 'Aspire Card' or cash. However after year 1 - there will be no choice, you will get your bursary in the form of, what is essentially book vouchers.

The Students' Union have had initial discussions on this issue and this is the way we think it will effect Students:

Negatives:
*There will be limited or NO CHOICE on what you are able to spend your bursary money on

*We don't feel it is relevant to all students. For example, an art student may need to spend the money on materials instead of books

*Books are cheaper on Amazon and students also get a 5% discount on that website

*The compulsory reading list generally doesn't total £500 - what would you spend the rest of the money on?

*Graduates sell on second hand books which are cheaper and it is also more economic - this card would mean everyone would get £500 to spend on books so people are less likely to recycle

*Library can give you the variety you need to study

*There are now numerous online resources - why do we need a bookshop

*Students may rely on the additional money coming from their bursary and may even plan it into a budget where books aren't necessarily a priority

*We aren't yet sure as to what happens with the left over money you don't spend on the card

*The increase in fees and the lack of repayment from the University may mean students could have to work longer/more hours

Positives:
*Every course book may be available to buy

*A bookshop will add prestige to the University

*Students will have to buy books, increase in academic ability and fairness

Is changing cash bursaries into book voucher bursaries a positive move or would you rather have the choice to spend it how you wish?

Please feel free to comment on what the Students Union are thinking - tell us if we're wrong! Tell us if what we are thinking does accurately reflect the views of our students!

National Student Survey Results 2008

The SU Perspective – September 2008.

The publication of the National Student Survey results for Anglia Ruskin University do not come as a surprise to the Students’ Union. The themes identified in this years result is part of a trend that has been growing over the last three to four years. These trends were identified in the Student Written Submission (2007) and have been articulated by students through Programme Committees, Faculty Boards and else where. This report outlines the Union’s interpretation of the results and sets out a number of actions that we believe should be implemented as a matter of urgency. Many of these recommendations are not new and have been put forward through various committees in the past.
