Presidents Blog
Hi and welcome to our first blog, here’s a little about my date to date activity. Largely the Presidents job revolves around liaising with people and being the voice of the students’ and that’s the main part of what I’ve been up to, as well as chatting to students to see what the issues on campus are.
Everyday I receive letters and emails from University Departments, Charities, other Unions, local and national Organisations, Local and National Council, informative articles, correspondents from the NUS and of course students, recently there have been many and I’ve been swamped so I apologies if I’ve not been on campus. Alongside that the elections are coming up and I’m busy promoting and sorting out that as well.
As well as all the correspondents I’ve had I’ve sat on many committees ranging across the University and locally, some particular ones to speak of are retention which is particularly high on the Universities agenda so we’ve been doing all to assist them in that. Also Cambridge campus developments are a rolling projects group that is moving very quickly and the SU, my self and Phil the General Manager are making sure the students needs and views are represented there. We also had a general meeting this week, it wasn’t well attended and that’s a worry – we need to revamp the student communication process so myself and the other officers are looking into this. Same with Union council and site exec, a new approach is needed in order to utilise our time, effort and most importantly find out the issues from student democratically.
This week I have a busy one, Board of Governors is a heavy one and many papers to read, as well as more campus development and a on campus demo to attend protesting against tuition fees.
I am also having problems with my council tax exemption at the moment so I am in discussion there to see if I can confirm future officers are not liable. This may seem like a small issue however if year on year full time student officers have to pay then this will mean wages will have to go up and this of course will take money from the SU and out of students pockets. It’s a bit like the indirect effect Northern Rock is having on the Tax payer currently.
If any readers of this are thinking they would like to fill an SU officer position either part time or full time drop me an email (
