Student Trustees

Who are they?

Anglia Ruskin Students’ Union has a Board of Trustees made up of five sabbatical trustees, four student trustees and four external trustees. Student trustees are elected by students to serve for a period of up to two years. They are elected to balance the Board and create a direct link to current students of the University, giving a unique perspective to the Board.

What is the Board of Trustees?

This is the governing body of the Students’ Union and consists of five sabbatical trustees, four student trustees and four external trustees. The Union’s General Manager also attends Board meetings and acts as the Chief Executive of the Union, reporting on the activities of the union and implementing strategy agreed by the Board. The Board of Trustees is responsible for the control and management of the students’ union. The Board meets four times a year, on alternate campuses, and is the ultimate decision making body of the Union. Each trustee has collective responsibility for all policy decisions of the Union which affect the students of Anglia Ruskin University.

Who is eligible to stand?

All students are automatically members of the Students’ Union, unless they have chosen to opt out. All registered students can vote for and stand for election as student trustee. Successful candidates take up office a week after election. Interested? Why not grab a sabbatical officer or pop into the Students’ Union office; you can even check out the Students’ Union website. You may also have an informal discussion with the General Manager to discuss the position of student trustee.

What time commitment will I have to make?

  • Four Board meetings per year (alternating between campuses; transport is provided if required)
  • Attendance at sub committees of the Board, as agreed
  • Preparation time for attendance at meetings

You can put in as much other time as you feel necessary to fulfill your role.

What responsibilities will I have?

The trustees collectively hold responsibility for the financial stability of the Union and take legal responsibility for decisions and the implications of such decisions. Trustees will monitor the performance of the Union in meeting-agreed objectives to further the aims of the organisation. The trustees are responsible for ensuring that the Union complies with the constitution and legal requirements.
