Declaring a disability

If you feel that an illness, impairment or specific learning difficulty could affect your studies and wellbeing, you can declare a disability to the university.

Who do I need to speak to?

Our Study Support Service offers information, advice and specialist support to students with disabilities, including mental health difficulties, ongoing medical conditions and specific learning difficulties, such as dyslexia.

The Study Support Service also hold drop-in sessions for current students, where you can discuss anything with us in confidence. The sessions take place from 12-1pm each week day in Cambridge and Chelmsford; and 12-1pm on Wednesdays and Fridays in Peterborough. You can also call or email at any time.

What will I gain by telling the university?

The university can offer information, advice and specialist support to students with disabilities, including mental health difficulties, ongoing medical conditions and specific learning difficulties, such as dyslexia.

Some examples of things they can help with are exam or timetabling adjustments, and access to facilities. You can also have your study needs assessment at the Anglia Access Centre.

What can I get out of the Student’s Union as a disabled student?

We have Disabled Students Representative position which is here to make sure everything that we do is inclusive and accessible. Your Student’s Union also encourages our staff to be trained in issuing mental health first aid, encourages the university to use audio recordings in lectures, and makes all of its online files available in different formats upon request. We also have an inactive Disabled Students Society which you could reignite! Email the experience officer for your campus to find out more.
